Zed Nelson Wins Photographer of the Year at 2025 Sony World Photography Awards

The winners of the 2025 Sony World Photography Awards were revealed last night during a prestigious ceremony at Somerset House in London. British photographer Zed Nelson was named Photographer of the Year for his powerful series The Anthropocene Illusion, which examines humanity’s artificial relationship with nature.

Spanning six years and four continents, Nelson’s photo series critiques the global paradox of environmental destruction alongside curated ‘natural’ experiences. His work offers a compelling visual commentary on the impact of human activity on the planet.

As the Photographer of the Year, Nelson was awarded $25,000, advanced Sony digital imaging equipment, and the opportunity to showcase new work at the 2026 awards exhibition.

In addition, this year’s Outstanding Contribution to Photography award was presented to Susan Meiselas, a pioneering figure in documentary photography. A dedicated exhibition of her influential work is now open to the public at Somerset House as part of the official Sony World Photography Awards exhibition.

The Sony World Photography Awards 2025 exhibition features over 300 photographic prints and multimedia installations, highlighting the best in contemporary photography from around the world. The exhibition runs until 5 May 2025.
